Exterior manifestations of inner demons, they are at once menacing and
silly, attractive and repulsive. The creatures have claws and teeth, but
have no locomotive power; no feet, no wings. Their soft, feathery sections
hide needle-sharp claws, and their fur is formed from layers fishhooks
and pencil points. Mounted like scientific specimens, could be either
safely preserved, or about come to life. They are obsessively constructed
from objects collected from daily life, just as the fears that inspired
them are slowly assembled from the interior detritus that I gather and
worry over.
They are inspired by my grandfather's Katsina doll collection, by Jim Henson's Muppets, and by my grandmother's holiday crafts formed from yucca pods and tumbleweeds and glitter.
They are toys, they are fetishes, they are nightmares.
